An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 struck off the coast of Alaska early in the morning on July 22 i.e Wednesday. According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake was centered 60 miles south-southeast, of Perryville, Alaska.
The quake prompted a tsunami warning to be issued for South Alaska, the Alaska Peninsula and the Aleutian Islands. It is still unknown if the tremblor caused any major damage or injuries in habitation.
“Based on the preliminary earthquake parameters … hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 300 km of the earthquake epicentre,” the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.
Alaska was hit by a 9.2-magnitude earthquake in March 1964. It was the strongest ever recorded in North America. It devastated Anchorage and unleashed a tsunami that slammed the Gulf of Alaska, the US west coast, and Hawaii. More than 250 people were killed by the quake and the tsunami then.
Apparently, the quakes between magnitudes 7.6 to 7.8 have the potential to produce destructive tsunamis, which can cause a huge damage.
