Indian tennis player Ankita Raina won the bronze medal in the women’s singles category after she lost her semi-final match against China’s Zhang Shuai at the ongoing 18th Asian Games in Jakarta.

A tough contest ensued between the two that lasted for over two hours but at the end, it was Shuai who came out of victorious 4-6, 6-7 (6). Ankita’s performance thus follows India’s best outing in the women’s single category which came from Sania Mirza who won a silver medal at the 2006 Games in Doha. Mirza had also won a bronze in the Guangzhou edition of the competition in 2010.

Thus, Ankita 25, with this bronze medal becomes only the second woman from India to have won a singles’ medal at the Asian Games. Ankita, who is India’s top-ranked tennis player had earlier dominated Hong Kong Eudice Chong 6-4, 6-1 to make her way into the semi-finals which automatically guaranteed her a medal.
