“I would like to congratulate Neeraj and all the medal winners in athletics. Their performance has been exceptional in the Asian Games,” Singh was quoted as saying by the Press Trust of India.

Neeraj Chopra on Monday became the first Indian Javelin thrower to win a gold medal at the intercontinental event. While Sudha Singh (3000m Steeplechase), Dharun Ayyasamy (men’s 400m hurdles) and Neena Varakil (long jump) won silver in their respective events.

“The standards of Indian athletes is improving day by day. Now we should target medals in the Olympics,” he added.

“Even I won two gold medals in this venue at Jakarta back in 1962 and I am very happy to see the Indian youngsters performing so well,” he signed off.
