COVID-19: BMC to book, penalize people for not wearing mask

In Mumbai, the Coronavirus cases have been increasing for over a month. To control it,  on Monday, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced that it would be regulating a one-month drive. They will not only book but also penalize people who don’t wear masks in public places.

Municipal commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal said, “A large number of citizens do not wear face masks which could lead to situation getting difficult in future thereby delaying opening up of the city.”

He added, “The BMC is initiating a mass drive of penalizing approximately 20,000 citizens per day found without masks in public spaces…this drive will continue for a month at least, and it will be monitored personally by me every evening,” reported Hindustan Times.

According to the BMC date, over 4,369 citizens have penalized Rs 8.73 lakh. Altogether, the BMC has collected over Rs 1.05 crore from 38,866 trespassers since April. In the first week of April, the BMC made it mandatory to wear face masks in public and also announced a fine of Rs 200 on the violators. Earlier, there was a fine of Rs 1000 for being caught while walking without a mask, which was later reduced to Rs 200.

On Monday, the BMC could not even reach 50% of the target. A BMC official said, “In general, the power outage caused a lot of hardships for the administration. Local trains were also shut for a while; and due to this, mobilization became difficult. Starting Tuesday, we plan to meet the daily target of booking 20,000 citizens.”
