Chennai Rains: Schools, Colleges Shut; IMD Issues Orange Alert

Heavy rainfall continues to lash Chennai and its neighbouring areas on Monday. The state government has declared holidays for schools and colleges on November 8 and 9. Many low lying areas are waterlogged. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted thunderstorms with heavy to very heavy rainfall over some places of Chennai and its suburbs for the next 48 hours. A cyclonic circulation over the southeast Bay of Bengal and the likely formation of a low-pressure area around November 9. This will cause heavy rains in the area for next two-three days more.

The States Revenue and disaster management minister KKSSR Ramachandran told PTI that four people have died in rain-related incidents. He added that one person has been injured. Ramachandran said that about 260 houses were damaged. The government has also set up 160 relief centres. Over 50,451 food packets were distributed to people by the government on Sunday. Units of the state and national disaster response forces have been deployed wherever necessary including Chennai.

PM Modi spoke to CM Stalin and assured all possible support from the centre in rescue and relief work. Chief Minister M K Stalin has also appealed to private firms to announce a holiday or allow employees to work from home.
