Court Actor & Activist Vira Sathidar Passes Away At 62

Ambedkarite activist and actor Vira Sathidar passed away in Nagpur. The actor best known for his performance in Court was admitted to a hospital in Nagpur after testing positive for Covid-19. He was on a ventilator for the past two days. Vira breathed his last early morning on Tuesday.

As reported by PTI, Vira Sathidar was undergoing treatment at AIIMS Nagpur after he was diagnosed with the coronavirus. He passed away due to sudden cardiorespiratory arrest in COVID-19 pneumonia with respiratory failure, said a hospital official.

Vira Sathidar became popular after he featured in Court. The movie won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in 2015. Apart from Court, which was India’s official entry to Oscars in 2016, Vira Sathidar featured in two more short films.

Filmmaker Chaitanya Tamhane, who worked with Sathidar in the 2014 film Court called it a “huge shock”. He said, “Vira was not only an actor, activist and a poet but also one of the nicest human beings I’ve met. I still can’t process it. He was a fantastic person and I can now only think of the time we spent making Court.”

Music director Sambhaji Bhagat who has closely worked with Sathidar confirmed the news and said, “His death has pained me a lot, we will not only miss him as a talented actor but also a beautiful human being.”
