COVID-19: India’s tally crosses 12.4 million-mark; set to surpass Brazil

India has added the most cases of Covid-19 over the weekend than any other country. It is all set to overtake Brazil to become the country with the worst outbreak in the world. On Sunday India registered 93,249 new infection and 513 related deaths. India reported a record 93,249 fresh Covid-19 cases on Sunday pushing the overall tally to 124,85,509, according to MoHFW. The death toll from the deadly infection jumped to 164,623.

With 93,249 new cases, India records the highest daily rise since mid-September when 93,337 cases were recorded.

Eight states account for 81.42 per cent of the infections reported in the last 24 hours, according to the Health Ministry. These eight states are Maharashtra, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Madhya Pradesh.

Out of which Sixty per cent of the daily cases are coming from Maharashtra alone. Mumbai alone has recorded more than 9,000 daily coronavirus cases on Saturday It also logged 27 deaths in the last 24 hours.

The surge in Covid cases has prompted many states to reinforce strict measures to curb the spread. They have applied Night Curfews, closure of educational institutions, restrictions on gatherings for marriages and other family functions.

The nation is at present on a vaccination drive, more than seven crore people have been vaccinated so far. After health workers and the government is expanding vaccine coverage to those above 45.
