The Harappan-era city of Dholavira in Gujarat has been added to Unesco’s World Heritage List. The decision was taken at the ongoing 44th session of the World Heritage Committee. It was held online and chaired from China on Tuesday.
The news was confirmed by the UN’s cultural body on Tuesday. Taking to its official Twitter handle, UNESCO tweeted, “BREAKING! Dholavira: A Harappan City, in #IndiaFlag of India, just inscribed on the @UNESCO #WorldHeritage List. Congratulations!”
Not only Dholavira but also Kakatiya Rudreshwara (Ramappa) Temple in Telangana was added to the World Heritage List by UNESCO. With the addition of two new sites, India’s number of World Heritage sites has increased to 40. With the inclusion of Dholavira, Gujarat has four World Heritage Sites. They are, Champaner near Pavagadh, Rani ki Vav in Patan and Ahmedabad.
PM Modi expressed his joy at the addition of Dholavira to the esteemed list. He tweeted,
Dholavira is believed to be one of the grandest cities belonging to the Indus Valley Civilization. It was discovered by JP Joshi of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) in 1967-68.
