Hathras Rape Case: 2.30 AM Cremation By Cops; Family Kept Out

The body of the 19-year-old Dalit girl Manisha Valmiki was forcibly taken by the UP police. The teenager who was raped and tortured by four men of the upper caste passed away in a Delhi hospital.  Her mortal remains were cremated by the police around 3 am on Wednesday in Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh.

The family of the now-deceased victim alleged that the police cremated her body in the middle of the night without their consent. They said the police forcibly performed the last rites last night. Though they wanted to bring her body home one last time and cremate her in the morning as per customs.

As per News 18 report, there was a clash between the police and angry villagers. Some relatives also tried to block the ambulance from going towards the cremation ground by throwing themselves in front of it. But the police pushed the protesters away and cremated the victim around 3 am in the absence of family members and without any customs.

Manisha died in Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital on Tuesday morning. She had suffered multiple fractures, paralysis, and a gash in her tongue in the horrific assault.

The Hathras district administration has said a compensation of Rs 10 lakhs will be provided to the victim’s family. The state government has also provided compensation of Rs 4.12 lakhs to the family.
