On Sunday, BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma was elected as the next Chief Minister of Assam. Sarma was elected the 15th Chief Minister of Assam, succeeding his colleague Sarbananda Sonowal. The decision was taken during a BJP legislative party meeting in Assam. Sarma’s name was announced by union agriculture minister Narendra Singh Tomar and party General Secretary Arun Singh as central observers, BJP’s Assam in charge was also present during the meeting.
Himanta Biswa Sarma’s name was officially confirmed at the first legislature party meeting of the 60 newly-elected MLAs of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), held at the state assembly. The formality of announcing Sarma as the next CM took place in the presence of Tomar and Singh.
On Saturday, two main applicants- Sonowal and Sarma were summoned by the party leadership to Delhi where they had many rounds of meetings with BJP national president JP Nadda and others. Both leaders returned to Guwahati late at night on the same flight.
According to the latest reports, Sarma would take oath as chief minister on Monday i.e May 10.
He is also serving as an MLA from the Jalukbari constituency in Assam from 2001 till 2015 from Indian National Congress and from May 2016 as a Bharatiya Janata Party member. A former member of the Indian National Congress, Sarma joined Bharatiya Janata Party on 23 August 2015.
