Good News For Employees: India Considering Four-Day Work Week

The Indian government is considering a four day work week. The Union Ministry of Labour and Employment is working on new labour codes. They will make way for a three day weekend but with longer working hours.

Labour and Employment Ministry‘s secretary Apurva Chandra said, “Companies will have to give three days’ of paid leaves and 12 hours of work per day to their employees with the consent of the workers. Companies who opt for the four day work week cannot increase the working hours beyond the mandatory 48-hour limit.  They will also have to provide a three-day consecutive holiday. But the employer and the employees must agree to the four-day schedule“.

The Centre had passed four labour codes in Parliament in September 2020. The Ministry is at present busy formulating rules to implement the four new labour codes to usher in labour reforms. The Ministry assures that the new laws will not compromise the interests of labourers and employees.

He added that as per the new laws all types of workers will now get minimum wages. Schemes for the migrant labourers are also being considered. All workers in organised and unorganised sectors will be covered by ESI. Women will be allowed to work in all kinds of trade, and also do night shifts.

The implementation of codes on wages, occupational safety, health and working conditions and social security will be ensured for all workers.

State Governments can make their own labour laws but in case of confrontation, the laws created by the Central government will be considered.
