Kanika Kapoor: “I was married and I wasn’t allowed to sing”

Bollywood singer Kanika Kapoor gained fame after her first Bollywood debut with Baby Doll for the movie Ragini MMS 2. Recently, in an interview, the singer spoke about her journey and struggles and how she was not allowed to sing.

During an interaction with Talking Music on JioSaavn, the Baby Doll singer said, “I was married at that time and I wasn’t allowed to sing, they were on the thought that ‘gaana bajana wala nahi banna hai.”

She also said, after some more convincing with her ex-husband, she had a deal with him that she will not take up singing as a profession but just practice it for her own self. Sooner or later, her then-husband agreed to let her chase music and the duo even visited some music producers for the same. However, not much materialized after it and through YouTube, she could showcase her talent to the audience.

Kapoor made her debut in 2012 with her first song Jugni Ji which became a huge success. Kanika also said that she received a call from Ekta Kapoor and offered her to sing Baby Doll it did take some time to materialize it, but, 6 months later, everything fell into place and she sang for Baby Doll. 

Baby Doll topped the charts and Kanika won the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer. Kapoor has sung many hit songs like Chittiyaan Kalaiyaan from Roy, Da Da Dasse from Udta Punjab, Beat Pe Booty from Flying Jatt and much more.

Kanika was married to an NRI businessman, Raj Chandok, in 1997 with whom she had three children. The couple divorced in 2012.
