Wimbledon 2018: Kevin Anderson stuns Roger Federer in a five-set thriller

Kevin Anderson produced the biggest upset of Wimbledon 2018 by defeating top seed Roger Federer 2-6, 6-7 (5), 7-5, 6-4, 13-11 in a thrilling Quarter final encounter at court one on Wednesday.

The eighth seed Anderson did not look like causing any sort of upset when he lost the first set 6-2 against the eight-time Wimbledon champion. Federer then equaled his own record of 34 consecutive sets won at Wimbledon as he went 2-0. The Swiss previously won 34 straight sets between the third round in 2005 and the final in 2006. After the first two sets it looked as if it would be a routine victory for the 36 year old. But, the South African had other plans.

The Swiss looked calm and composed in the third set as well and was on match point but Anderson fought hard to save it, which proved to be the turning point of the match. He broke Federer’s serve in the 11th game of the set held his nerve to clinch the set 7-5.

The fourth set went on serve till six games before Anderson broke to make it 4-3. Roger Federer had break point chances in the later stages but Anderson served with precision to deny the top seed to make his way back and clinched it at 6-4.

The final set was nothing short of a blockbuster. Kevin Anderson and Roger Federer both exchanged holds in the decider before Anderson broke and managed to pocket the final set 13-11 and a spot in the all important semifinal.

Meanwhile, the 31 year old Serbian Novak Djokovic entered the semi-final with a 6-3 3-6 6-2 6-2 win over Kei Nishikori. He will face the winner of Rafael Nadal and Juan Martin Del Potro.
