Because of the extended lockdown in Coronavirus pandemic, several filmmakers are juggling with the dates to release their much-anticipated films which are in the pipeline. Films such as Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana starrer, ‘Gulabo Sitabo’ went on to release on OTT streaming giants. While there were speculations that the makers of Ajay Devgn starrer ‘Maidaan’ might consider releasing the flick on OTT, the producer confirms not releasing it on OTT streaming giant.
In a recent conversation with Hindustan Times, Boney Kapoor spilled the beans about 70mm screen experience and his plans of releasing ‘Maidaan’ on silver screens. The producer while talking about his upcoming flick informed the daily that in his 40-year-long career (as a film producer), he must have produced as many films by now, and all of them have released in theatres. “Going by my experience, I can confidently say that all kinds of platforms, be it OTT, cinema halls or television, will co-exist, and thrive as well,” says Kapoor, who has Ajay Devgn-starrer Maidaan, Valimai (Tamil actioner starring Ajith Kumar) and Pawan Kalyan-starrer Vakeel Saab (Telugu remake of Pink) in his kitty,” he said.
“I strongly believe there are certain films, which are meant for larger-than-life, theatrical experience, and so, they should go to cinema halls first. As for me, I am extremely excited to bring my (new) films to the big screen,” says Kapoor, who is yet to complete work on all his three films, including the ambitious sports-drama, Maidaan, which recounts the story of ‘golden era of Indian football (between 1952-1962),” the filmmaker added further.
Talking about filmmakers who are opting to release their films on OTT, Boney said that these are extraordinary times(COVID-19 pandemic). He mentioned that none of us have witness this before. If a certain producer can’t afford to wait till the theatres reopens, then OTT platforms can be a big blessing for them. As they can easily recover their investments through the release.
