Heavy rains lashed Mumbai and its suburbs leading to flooded roads and the suspension of local trains. More than 15 people were reported dead in Mumbai’s Chembur and Vikhroli areas due to landslides. Several were feared trapped under the debris. Rescue operation is still on in both these areas.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a compensation of ₹ 2 lakh each to the families of those who died. Rs. 50,000 would be given to those injured.
Waterlogging was reported in several areas, including Chunabhatti, Sion, Dadar, and Gandhi Market, Chembur and Kurla LBS Road.
Visuals shared from news agency ANI showed a car being swept away by the strong currents in Borivali east area.
The local train services in Mumbai too have been hit due to incessant rainfall. The Western Railway has announced the suspension of suburban services due to waterlogging at multiple locations. Central Railway also informed that due to waterlogging in tracks at Dadar, Parel, Matunga, Kurla, Sion, Bhandup and other locations, train services on mainline were suspended between CSMT and Thane.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai in the backdrop of heavy rains. The IMD added that a sudden change in climatic conditions led to Mumbai witnessing over 100 mm rainfall in six hours. The island city will continue to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall in the next five days.
