Netflix has just picked up the rights for the Studio Ghibli movies for all territories except North America and Japan. Studio Ghibli is a Japanese animation film studio based in Tokyo, Japan. The studio is renowned for its anime feature films as well as the several short films and television commercials it has produced. Studio Ghibli was founded on 5 June 1985 by Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, Toshio Suzuki, and Yasuyoshi Tokuma.
Netflix announced the news that it had picked up the rights for the Studio Ghibli movies through social media. It shared a message, writing, “From February 2020, 21 films from the legendary animation house Studio Ghibli are coming exclusively to Netflix. We’re proud to bring beloved, influential stories like Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle and My Neighbour Totoro to first-time viewers and high-flying fans alike.”
However, Netflix also had some bad news for fans in the US, Canada, and Japan. It tweeted out saying, “For our international mates in the mentions…the films will be available on Netflix ANZ and globally (excluding the US, Canada and Japan).”
This is still great news for Netflix subscribers internationally who will get to see 21 new movies from the studio.
“In this day and age, there are various great ways a film can reach audiences,” Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki said in a statement toThe Hollywood Reporter. “We’ve listened to our fans and have made the definitive decision to stream our film catalog. We hope people around the world will discover the world of Studio Ghibli through this experience.”
Netflix subscribers can start viewing these films in February 2020.
