Oscar-winning Costume Designer Bhanu Athaiya Passed Away At The Age Of 91

India’s first Oscar winning costume designer, Bhanu Athaiya passed away in Mumbai on Thursday i.e. October 15. She was 91-year-old and the cause of her demise is said to be her brain tumour.
She had made an history after winning the Oscar for Best Costume Design for Lord Richard Attenborough’s iconic film ‘Gandhi’ of 1983.

Bhanu’s daughter, Radhika Gupta while talking about her mother informed news agency PTI, “She passed away early this morning. Eight years ago, she was diagnosed with a tumour in her brain. For the last three years, she was bedridden because one side (of her body) was paralysed.”  The designers last rites to take place in Chandanwadi crematorium in South Mumbai.

The legendary costume designer is known for contributing her skills Bollywood projects such as ‘Johny Mera Naam’, ‘Geeta Mera Naam’, ‘Karz’, ‘Ek Duuje Ke Liye’, ‘Razia Sultan’, ‘Nikaah’, ‘Agneepath’ (1990), ‘Ajooba’, ‘1942 – A Love Story’ and among others.
