Ramayan Actor Shyam Sundar Kalani, Who Played Sugriv, Dies

Veteran actor Shyam Sundar Kalani, who starred as Sugriv in Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan, has passed away. As per reports from multiple news sites, the actor was suffering from cancer. His Ramayan co-star Arun Govil, who played the role of Lord Rama in the series, has confirmed the news of the actor’s demise. Arun Govil paid tribute to Shyam Sundar through Twitter.

“Sad to know about demise of Mr Shyam Sundar, who played the role of Sugriv in Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan… A very fine person and a gentleman. May his soul rest in peace.”

Similarly, co-star Sunil Lahri, who played Lakshman in Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan, also remembered the late actor on Twitter. He expressed his grief as well as wished strength to the family of the deceased.

“Very sad and sorry to hear sudden demise of our colleague Mr Shyam Kalani, who played role of Sugriva and Bali with us in Ramayan. God give peace to his soul and strength to his family to face irrecoverable loss…. RIP.”

Audiences can now view Ramayan on their TV screens as the show is being re-telecasted on Doorsarshan. The show had an impressive array of actors. It included Arun Govil as Lord Ram, Deepika Chikhalia as Site and Sunil Lahri as Lakshman. Ramayan was first aired on Doordarshan in 1987.

In addition, Ramayan also features other well known stars. Wrestler and actor Dara Singh was cast as Hanuman in the series while Arvind Trivedi played Ravana. Moreover, Lalita Pawar was cast as Manthara while Vijay Arora played Indrajit.
