Strawberry Moon Eclipse: Date, time, where and how to watch Chandra Grahan June 2020

The second penumbral lunar eclipse of 2020, known as the Strawberry Moon Eclipse, will take place between 5th and 6th June. A lunar eclipse is when the Earth comes between the Sun and the Moon, thus casting a shadow over the Moon. There are three types of lunar eclipses: total lunar eclipse, partial lunar eclipse, and penumbral lunar eclipse. During a penumbral lunar eclipse, the Moon moves through the outer part of the Earth’s shadow, thus becoming very faint.

Why is it called Strawberry Moon?

The name ‘Strawberry Moon’ is derived from the red colour of the ripe strawberry fruit. The Full Moon is meant to signify a short season for harvesting strawberries in the northeastern region of North America. The June’s full moon is also alternatively called the ‘Hot Moon or ‘Rose Moon’.

Which parts of the world will the eclipse be visible from?

The lunar eclipse will be visible from parts of Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa including other regions in the Pacific, Atlantic, and the Indian Ocean.

The timing of penumbral lunar eclipse in India

In India, the eclipse will begin around 11:15 PM on 5th June and will continue till about 2:34 AM on 6th June. The total duration of the eclipse will be nearly three hours and 18 minutes.

You can watch lunar eclipse completely online through live streaming. YouTube channels including Slooh and Virtual Telescope will be live streaming the celestial events.

In 2020 we will get to see a total of four penumbral lunar eclipses, out of which the first one took place between January 10 to January 11. after that the next lunar eclipses will happen in July 5 we have another penumbral lunar eclipse, the Thunder Moon Eclipse. The next lunar eclipse is on November 30, 2020.

We also have a beautiful “ring of fire” eclipse of the Sun also known as Surya Grahan or Solar Eclipse. It will occur on June 21, incidentally, the longest day of the year. The solar eclipse will be visible from Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.
