Indian Archer Deepika Kumari bowed out of the ongoing Tokyo Olympics. She lost to South Korea’s An San in the women’s individual quarter-finals at Yumenoshima Park on Friday. Kumari had scripted history by becoming the first archer from India to reach the quarter-final stages at the Games. The World No. 1 archer returns home empty-handed from her 3rd Olympic campaign.
Top seed An San defeated world number one Deepika Kumari with 6-0 to march into the semi-finals of the individual event. The 20-year-old South Korean is aiming for her third gold medal in Tokyo. This is after finishing top of the podium in the mixed team event and the women’s recurve team event.
“It was a disappointing performance, and I could not perform up to my expectations,” she said after the match.
This was Deepika Kumari’s first quarterfinal appearance in the women’s individual event at her third Olympics. In the 2012 London Olympics, she lost in the first round. In the 2016 Rio Olympics, she bowed out in the pre-quarterfinals.
Deepika’s husband Atanu Das is India’s lone archer left in the competition and will be in action on Saturday when he takes on Japan’s Takaharu Furukawa in the quarterfinals of the men’s recurve.
