West Bengal Congress President Somen Mitra Passes Away at 78

West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chief Somen Mitra passed away on Thursday (July 30) morning. He was 78. Mitra died due to heart and age-related ailments in a hospital in Kolkata.

The news was confirmed by West Bengal Youth Congress, who tweeted, “WBPCC President Somen Mitra has breathed his last, a short while ago. As we struggle to come to terms with this immense loss, all our prayers and thoughts are with Dada’s family. May his soul rest in peace.”

As reported by sources to PTI, Mitra was admitted to a hospital earlier this month with kidney and heart ailments. He passed away at the hospital in Kolkata following a cardiac arrest. His samples had tested negative for coronavirus COVID-19.

Mitra had undergone a bypass surgery some years back when he was a Lok Sabha Member of Parliament (MP).

He is survived by his son and wife.

Mitra was a three-time president of the Congress’ West Bengal unit from 1992-1996, 1996-1998, and then again from September 2018. He was also a seven-term MLA from the Sealdah assembly constituency. Mitra was one of the chief architects behind the Communist Party of India (Marxist). He led Left Front and Congress alliance in West Bengal during the 2016 Legislative Assembly polls.
