19 out of 25 Dirtiest Cities in the state of West Bengal

19 out of 25 Dirtiest Cities in West Bengal, Indore Cleanest City in India.

It has been revealed that 19 out of the top 25 dirtiest cities in India are located in the state of West Bengal as per a cleanliness survey conducted by the union housing and urban affairs ministry.

The list of cities in West Bengal in the top 25 dirtiest cities includes Darjeeling, Siliguri, Serampur, Madhyamgram, North Barrackpore, Bankura etc. They fared extremely poorly on the scale of sanitation indicators like waste collection, processing and disposing of solid waste, open defecation etc.

The Swachh Survekshan 2018 surveyed 4203 Urban Local Bodies from municipal corporations to Nagar panchayats and cantonment boards across the country between January 4 and March 10.

As per the state rankings Jharkhand was awarded the cleanest states followed by Maharashtra and Chattisgarh. Whereas the 3 dirtiest States were Nagaland, Puducherry and Tripura in that order.

The report was released by PM Narendra Modi in Indore on Saturday.

As per the city rankings, the cleanest were Indore followed by Bhopal and Chandigarh. The dirtiest cities as per the survey are North Barrackpore, Bankura and Bhadreswar.

The story of Indore from 25th position to the 1st in one year is incredible.

he local government body has taken several other steps to stop people from littering. The IMC has distributed 1000 dustbins free to vehicle owners in order to encourage them not to throw waste out of their windows. The bottle shaped dustbins fit into car bottle holders and are now sold for Rs. 35 each in the city. The Indore Municipal Corporation has taken other steps too, such as employing 1000 rag pickers in order to segregate dry and wet waste and installing recycling units in gardens, hotels and marriage halls to create compost from the organic waste.

There are five reasons which were significant in getting this tag of ‘Cleanest City’

  • Prior to this National Movement, Indore Municipal workers did not use to work but take their salaries. When civic body took action and removed around 500 workers for non-performance, others got on their feet and started working actively.
  • 4000 toilets were constructed within four months to make the city open-defecation free. (“Yaha Pe**** Karna mana hai” phrase is being taken seriously so far :P) .
  • Loud Speakers were installed on the garbage collection vehicle to spread the awareness. It would make a big impact when the songs which were being played are sung by Shaan and Kailash Kher.
  • In three months, civic body/Indore Municipal Corporation started working at night. Around 500 trucks of garbage were picked from the road and disposed to Biodegradable spaces.
  • 5. Around 400 Garbage Trucks were employed for door-to-door garbage collection.
