Akshay Kumar: Chak de was a different story, Gold is different

Irritated with the comparison between Shah Rukh Khan's Chak de! India and his own upcoming release 'Gold', Akshay Kumar terms comparison as waggish

Gold is an upcoming historical sports drama film in which Akshay Kumar will be seen playing the lead role of Tapan Das who contributed towards India’s first ever hockey medal after independence. The film is directed by by Reema Kagti and produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar under the Excel Entertainment banner.

Recently, when Akshay Kumar got to know that his film Gold has been compared with Shah Rukh Khan’s Chak de! India, released back in the year 2007, Kumar was quite upset and found it waggish as the film was based upon the Indian women’s national field-hockey team trained by Kabir Khan (Shah Rukh Khan).

This happened during Gold film’s promotions, while addressing press Kumar said, “Everything will be a competition. For me, it is all about doing a good film. Chak De… was a different story, Gold is different. It is frivolous to even think like that or competing with that film. Don’t compare it, it is all different”.

The film has a plot which revolves around the journey of Tapan Das an assistant manager, who dreams to get a gold medal for the then newly-independent India.

Kumar also mentioned that he was not aware about this fact but when Reema narrated it, he was convinced to go for it.

Further he added, “Reema is a tough master, she handled the sports thing very well. I salute her. It is commendable. It is a tough film to handle as you are taking the audience to the time period of 1936, then 1947 and 1948, she had to do so much homework. To make a film in that era is a very difficult job”.

According to Akshay’s narration of his character, Tapan Das was a controversial guy. He was also a drunk and a cheater. But within a year, he brought 11 people together and made a team who would represent India in Olympics, which later wins gold medal. He said that he felt the story had potential and need to be told to the audiences.

Mouni Roy is making feature film debut through this opportunity, it also stars Amit Sadh, Kunal Kapoor and Vineet Singh.

Satyameva Jayate and Gold will be screened on same release date that is August 15.
