Basavaraj Bommai Takes Oath As New CM Of Karnataka

BJP leader Basavaraj Bommai has replaced B.S. Yediyurappa as the new Chief Minister of Karnataka. He was sworn in as the 23rd chief minister of Karnataka. The oath-taking ceremony took place at the Raj Bhavan at 11 am on July 28th.

Basavaraj Bommai was the home minister in the BS Yediyurappa government.  His name for the post was proposed by Yediyurappa himself and backed by all other BJP MLAs.

Yediyurappa had announced his resignation on Monday. This was following months of speculation over a change of leadership in the state.

Outgoing chief minister B.S. Yediyurappa congratulated Bommai on his elevation. He tweeted, “Congratulations to Shri @BSBommai on being elected as the new Chief Minister of Karnataka. I am confident you will lead Karnataka in the path of development and fulfil the aspirations of people of the state.”

Basavaraj Bommai belongs to the powerful Lingayat community in Karnataka. His father SR Bommai also served as Karnataka’s chief minister. Basavaraj Bommai joined the BJP in 2008 and has risen in the party ranks since then. An engineer by profession, Bommai was elected as a member of the Karnataka legislative council twice.
