Hathras Rape Victim Battling For Life Passes Away

A 19-year-old Dalit girl Manisha Valmiki from Uttar Pradesh succumbed to injuries at a hospital in New Delhi. She was allegedly gang-raped by four upper-caste men in Hathras district on September 14. The girl was taken to a hospital in Aligarh the next day in a critical condition. Manisha was later shifted to AIIMS, Delhi, a day earlier after her condition showed no signs of improvement. She was in critical condition and on a ventilator.

As reported by sources to Indian Express, the teenager had gone to the fields with her mother on September 14 and went missing soon after. She was later found brutally injured and raped. The victim’s tongue was cut off and the spinal cord severely injured, among other serious injuries. The police said the victim had been dragged into a field and gang-raped. She had also been strangled with her dupatta.

The four men were arrested based on a statement provided by the victim on September 23. She had briefly regained consciousness and had accused Sandeep, his uncle Ravi (35), and their friend Luv Kush, of committing the crime.

Congress’ UP in charge Priyanka Gandhi attacked the Yogi Adityanathh government over the crime against women. Samajwadi Party spokesperson Sunil Singh Sajan said that the incident has exposed the law and order in the state. Bollywood actors expressed anger over the incident. While Kangana Ranaut demanded capital punishment for the rapists, Ridha Chadha said that more than the word ‘Dalit’, the brutality of an assault should trigger people. BSP chief Mayawati too slammed the UP government over the incident.
