The nation is aware about the deep bond that Amitabh Bachchan and the Gandhi family shared.

At one point of time, former Prime Minister of India Rajiv Gandhi and legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan were the thickest of friends. Even, during the period of 1975 Emergency, the actor was often publicly spotted with Sanjay Gandhi (Rajiv Gandhi’s younger brother).

This had close bond between the two families had sparked a major controversy with media opposing Bachchan’s closeness to the Gandhi family. Not only the Gandhi family, Amitabh Bachchan also shared a strong bond with Sonia Gandhi who at that time, was about to marry Rajiv Gandhi.

There was a time when, Sonia Gandhi treated Amitabh Bachchan like her brother and her daughter Priyanka Gandhi called him ‘Mama’. It is said that in the year 1968, Amitabh Bachchan went to the Delhi Palam airport to pick up Sonia Gandhi on a cold winter night.

After the sudden death of Sanjay Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi had to plunge into politics. Along with Rajiv, his close friend Amitabh Bachchan also ventured into politics and fought the Lok Sabha election in 1984-85 from Allahabad. But Amitabh Bachchan’s political career did not last long.

Amitabh Bachchan resigned from politics after his name got embroiled in the infamous Bofors Scandal, the actor then returned to films. He was eventually acquited from the scam. Amitabh’s wife, Jaya Bachchan, a parliamentarian, had once cited that Amitabh exited early from the politics of India because he couldn’t handle it, being a sensitive person.
