Maharashtra observed the first day of a weekend lockdown after five days of daytime restrictions and night curfews. But seems like the state is all set for a 15-day lockdown commencing from April 12. The reason being the rising cases of COVID-19. A final decision on this is expected to be taken on Sunday.

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has indicated that the state government would likely impose a lockdown of 15 days to break the chain of infection. It is likely to start on Monday, April 12. This was conveyed during an all-party meet called by the CM. Thackeray also sought the cooperation of all parties for any decision that the state will take in this regard. He was assured support by all, including former Chief Minister and leader of opposition Devendra Fadnavis.

The opposition leaders have asked the state government to announce a relief package for those who will be impacted. They also said relief measures and monetary packages for migrant labourers and daily wage earners. Also subsidised foodgrains should be made available to them. Relief must also be extended to small traders, retailers whose business will be affected.

Maharashtra is the worst affected state and is also facing multiple challenges. It now accounts for about 51 per cent of the total active cases in the country. Also a short supply of antiviral drug Remdesivir and Covid vaccines. Hospital infrastructure is also overstretched.
