Maharashtra is facing the brunt of the monsoon, rivers are in spate flooding the surrounding areas. The unrelenting rain for the past few days has left thousands stranded in floods and landslides. More than 138 people have died in rain-related incidents.
More than 84,452 people, including more than 40,000 in Kolhapur Regency, were shifted to safer places in the West Maharashtra Pune Division.
“Rainfall in various parts of the state often coinciding with high tides and also discharge from dams led to various regions getting inundated,” the Maharashtra government said in a press release.
Not only Raigad district, landslides were also reported in Ambeghar and Mirgaon villages in Satara. Rescue teams of the National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force and other agencies are already in the state to assist the relief work. Six teams of the Indian Army and Navy have also joined in.
The Maharashtra government has, meanwhile, announced an ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh each to the kin of people who have died in landslides triggered by heavy rains in different parts of the state. The injured will be treated in hospitals at government expense.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday condoled the loss of lives in the landslide in Maharashtra’s coastal Raigad district and announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased.
