P Chidambaram: Congress has not yet declared Rahul Gandhi as PM candidate

P Chidambaram was of the opinion that Congress has not declared Rahul Gandhi as PM candidate, but will only after 2019 Lok Sabha elections

With barely six months remaining for the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections, senior Congress leader P Chidambaram stated that the party has not declared Rahul Gandhi as its prime ministerial candidate as of yet. Chidambaram added that Congress’s main focus is on ousting the BJP from power.

Expressing his opinion on the prime ministerial candidate, Chidambaram stated that the decision would be taken only after a consensus between the allies after the polls. Speaking on the issues, he said, as reported by the News 18 Tamil, “Congress has not officially declared Rahul Gandhi as its Prime Ministerial candidate. On the contrary, when two or three persons (in the party) spoke about it, the AICC denied it and told people not to speak about it.” Adding more, he said that the issue is not of prominence to the party.

Stating that Congress wants to an alternative ‘progressive’ government, the former Union finance minister said, “Rahul Gandhi has not said this. The Congress has not said it wants to bring a person as prime minister. We will decide on the issue (of PM) once the alliance wins and the alliance partners will sit and decide on it.”

It is to be known that even party president Rahul Gandhi have spoken on this issue and said that the party will take a decision on the PM face, only after the polls. He had stated, “Conversations (with the opposition parties) on leadership are going to happen after the elections, after we have pushed the BJP and the RSS back.” But, he had also said that he is ready to take the responsibility, provided his party performed well in the 2019 elections and allies are ok with it.
