Raksha Bandhan or Rakhi festival is one of the popular Indian festival dedicated for all the siblings. Traditionally, on this Hindu festival, sisters tie the Rakhi to their brothers. In return the brothers treat their sisters with gifts and promises of protecting and loving unconditionally. Sisters can also tie the Rakhi to their elder or younger sisters. The festival is always celebrated on the full moon in the month of Sravana in the lunar calendar. This year the Raksha Bandhan festival falls on August 22, Saturday. What are Rakhi’s?
On the auspicious occasion of Raksha Bandhan, Rakhi is tied to the brothers or siblings. Rakhi plays an important role while celebrating this festival. As per one of the popular traditions in Indian culture the holy treads are tied to people’s wrist as a symbol of protection and good luck. In case of Rakhi festival, the tread which is tied on brothers wrist symbolizes the unmatched bond of love, care and respect between the siblings. The border perspective of this festival (Raksha Bandhan) conveys an intrinsic message of universal brotherhood and sisterhood, wherein the siblings promises to protect and love each other. While many people love buying cool looking Rakhi’s from the market, people also like making them at home putting in some extra efforts just for their dearly siblings.
General ingredients needed to make Rakhi at home:
- Woolen or Zari thread
- Beads
- Paper/Cloth/ Ribbon
- Glitter
- Glue
- Buckram Sheet
- Pearls
- Kundan
- Fur
DIY Rakhi:
- Decide what type of Rakhi you want to make at home- floral, beads, color paper, cartoon, pearls, etc
- Once you decide which type of Rakhi you want to make. Know the perfect size of the hand that would fit the wrist
- Now cut the woolen thread or ribbon as per the measurement of the hand and keep it aside
- You can add pearls, beads in this thread or decorate the ribbon with the Kundan or half pearls
- Now take a small piece of buckram sheet and cut it into a circle, usually little bigger can a coin (the size of Rakhi)
- Take big size ribbon/cloth/color paper and cut it into the shape of the buckram sheet that you have cut earlier. This will be the upper base of your Rakhi
- Now start decorating the upper base with beads, stones, glitter, colored paper, fur or any other things
- Stick everything one-by-one on the base and let the glue dry completely
- Now take the buckram sheet and place the ribbon on top of it. Stick the buckram sheet and thread/ribbon nicely
- Now take the base of the Rakhi and place it over the ribbon/thread which has buckram sheet stick below. Stick all the three together with the help of glue and let them dry
- After the Rakhi dries, you can give it a final touch adding glitter thread or by adding more beads or Kundan
