Shahid Kapoor: I smoked almost 20 cigarettes a day for ‘Kabir Singh’

Shahid Kapoor after ‘Udta Punjab’ will once again be seen depicting a dark character in his upcoming release ‘Kabir Singh’. The film that is a remake of a hit Telugu film ‘Arjun Reddy’ which starred Vijay Deverakonda, is all about an angst-driven surgeon, who loses the love of his life and lands on a path of self-destruction.

The trailer of film garnered much appreciation from viewers and critics alike. Shahid’s look in the film was loved by his fans. But not many know the sweat and the blood the ‘Padmaavat’ star shed for it. He had to shed 14 kgs to get his college boy look and then gain weight to look bloated and out of shape for the alcoholic surgeon.

To get under the skin of his character Shahid Kapoor had to smoke over 20 cigarettes and beedis in a day. A move that he does not promote. He also had to take two hours shower to remove the smell of the cigarette before going home to his kids.

As per a Bollywood Hungama report, Shahid said, “I don’t endorse smoking whatsoever. However, the role required it as the protagonist has this angst and rage within him. It wasn’t easy and it came to a point where I smoked almost 20 cigarettes a day. It would take me close to 2 hours to freshen up before I returned home to my children.”

Kabir Singh also features Kiara Advani in a pivotal role. The film that has been helmed by Sandeep Vanga who helmed ‘Arjun Reddy’ is slated for June 2019 release.
