Caste killing: Amrutha uses social media to get justice for Pranay

Amrutha, wife of Perumalla Pranay Kumar, who was allegedly killed for honour last week, took to Facebook on Monday, launching her fight against injustice.

Killing for inter-caste marriages have not stopped in India, rather it’s surfacing every day. The only difference is, these days things have started coming to the fore grabbing attention of the men who matter and thus chances of getting justice though is more compared to earlier times.

A few days ago, a man named Pranay Kumar was hacked to death in front of his wife Amrutha Varshini Rao in Telangana’s Nalgonda district last Friday by an unidentified man. The man was murdered after six months of their marriage, which was an inter-caste one.

Cops say, the Pranay —a Dalit from Mala community — was attacked with a machete and hacked to death in broad daylight when he and his wife were stepping out of a hospital Miryalguda town, 150 km away from Hyderabad. Later it was revealed that the unidentified man was allegedly hired by the 21-year-old Amrutha’s father, Maruthi Rao, as she married 23-year-old Pranay against the will of the family.

But the murder had a heavy bearing on Amrutha who refuses to budge and launched a campaign on social media page ‘Justice for Pranay’. “Don’t worry Pranay…U r not alone.. Not only me u are in the heart of crores of people.. Many people are fighting for justice (sic),” a post read on the Facebook page.

The post, which was linked to Amrutha’s personal account, garnered support from all corners and had crossed 60,000 likes by Tuesday afternoon. Amrutha said that she received plenty of messages and support poured in for the justice that Pranay deserves. She also said that her husband always used to oppose casteism and that she is determined to end it now via this campaign.

People expressed their opinion on the killing and many demanded death penalty for Amrutha’s father who allegedly plotted Pranay’s murder by hiring contract killers. The Facebook page also shared several pictures of protests and rallies carried out across the length and breadth of the state.
