The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on Thursday reappointed R S Sharma as its chief for next two years. His term has been extended till September 30, 2020. Issuing the statement, Personnel Ministry informed that further communication has been sent to the Department of Telecommunication.

The statement says, report IE, “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the reappointment of Shri Ram Sewak Sharma, IAS (retd) as Chairperson, TRAI for a further period beyond 10.08.2018 upto 30.09.2020 i.e the date on which he attains the age of 65 years or until further ordered, whichever is earlier.”

Sharma had last week sparked a controversy by tweeting his Aadhaar card number and had challenged people to their worst, reports Indian Express. Justifying the move, Sharma had stated that this was done to challenge the netizens who claim to harm people based on Aadhaar’s details. He had written, “My Aadhaar number is XXXX XXXX XXXX (masked). Now I give this challenge to you: Show me one concrete example where you can do any harm to me!”

The twitteratis took the challenge and posted Sharma’s cellphone number, residential address and other personal details. After this Sharma replied that no harm can be caused to him as it is present in the public domain.

Citing similar incidents, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) advised people not to indulge in such acts on Tuesday. It released an statement saying, “…such activities are uncalled for and should be refrained as these are not in accordance with the law. Any person indulging in such acts or abetting or inciting others to do so makes themselves liable for prosecution and penal action under the law.”
