“Partition’s pains can never be forgotten. Millions of our sisters and brothers were displaced and many lost their lives due to mindless hate and violence. In memory of the struggles and sacrifices of our people, 14th August will be observed as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day,” tweeted PM Modi.

“May the #PartitionHorrorsRemembranceDay keep reminding us of the need to remove the poison of social divisions, disharmony and further strengthen the spirit of oneness, social harmony and human empowerment.”

The PM added that,

The Prime Minister’s announcement comes a day ahead of India’s 75th Independence Day. Pakistan observes its Independence Day on August 14. India’s last viceroy Lord Mountbatten on June 3, 1947, announced that India would be splitting into two nations(India & Pakistan) after its independence. Millions of people were displaced and many more were killed due to riots that broke out as India and Pakistan were divided.

India will be celebrating the 75th year of Independence on Sunday. The day has the Prime Minister hoisting the National flag and addressing the country from the Red Fort every year.
