Covid-19 Updates: India reports 47,704 new cases, total tally crosses 14.83 lakh

India recorded a single-day spike of 47,704 positive cases and 654 deaths in the last 24 hours, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Tuesday. The total Coronavirus positive cases stand at 14,83,157 including 4,96,988 active cases, 9,52,744 discharged 33,425 deaths.

As of now, India is behind the United States and Brazil in terms of the total confirmed Covid-19 cases. Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, and Gujarat have reported the highest number of cases. However, infections are arising rapidly in states like Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh.

On Monday, Uttar Pradesh overtook Maharashtra in terms of the number of samples tested for the coronavirus infection. While UP has tested 19.41 lakh samples to date, Maharashtra has tested 19.25 lakh. However, Tamil Nadu, is ahead of the two states, having tested more than 24.14 lakh samples till now.

On Monday, the human clinical trial of indigenously developed Covaxin, a possible vaccine against the novel coronavirus, began at an institute in Bhubaneswar on Monday, said a senior official.

Earlier this week, All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, administered the first dose of Covaxin to a 30-year-old man. The news was confirmed by Dr. Sanjay Rai, Professor at the Centre for Community Medicine at AIIMS. According to CTRI, the Covaxin phase I and II trials are expected to take one year and three months.
