A 54-year-old man infected with coronavirus died at a hospital In Tamil Nadu in the early hours of Wednesday. This is the first death recorded in the state. State Health Minister C Vijayabaskar said the man had a medical history of prolonged illness with “uncontrolled diabetes”. The death toll in India has risen to 11 now.
Health Minister C Vijayabaskar tweeted, “Despite our best efforts, the COVID-19 positive patient at MDU, Rajaji Hospital, passed away… he had medical history of prolonged illness with steroid dependent COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), uncontrolled diabetes with hypertension.”
Six more persons, all residents of Chennai, tested positive for coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday. This is the highest number of cases reported in a single day so far. This takes the total number of cases to 18 in the State.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday put the entire nation under a strict 21-day lockdown to combat the new virus and prevent its spread. He requested the citizens to follow the rules and not step out of their houses. The PM assured citizens that the supply of essential goods will not discontinue or be affected, as the government is taking all steps to ensure a continuous supply.
Union Health Ministry has confirmed coronavirus cases in India rose to 519 on Tuesday, of them, 43 are foreign nationals.
