A boat carrying almost 45 passengers capsized in the Brahmaputra river of North Guwahati on Wednesday. The boat accident left at least 2 people killed, while 15 people have been recovered as of yet.

According to reports, the boat developed a technical glitch following which, it collided with a water supply project near Ashwaklanta Temple in the Brahmaputra. Its engine stopped working and sank just 200 metres away from the bank.

The boat capsized in the Brahmaputra river, used to travel daily from north Guwahati to the city. The rescue operation team — NDRF and SDRF — have rushed to the spot. A 25 member of state disaster management team has also reached to the spot.

One of the survivors, Utpal Chamua, saved himself by jumping on the rescue operation boat. However, rest of the people were not much as lucky and did not have time to jump. They went under the river along with the sinking boat. Chamua said, “We threw life jacket from the rescue boat to those who were trying to swim and one woman who was swimming with her child, wrapped around her could only be saved.”
