Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba meets social media representatives to curb rumours. Gauba has asked the officials to nominate India based Grievance Redressal

Rajiv Gauba, the Union Home Secretary, met social media representatives which included Facebook, Google, Twitter, WhatsApp, YouTube and Instagram to review actions taken by them to curb misuse of social media sites by undesirable elements and miscreants to spread rumours through their platforms.

Besides Rajiv Gauba, the meeting was attended by other senior officers of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Security agencies, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and Department of Telecommunications.

The meeting comes in the wake of rumours which led to number of lynching incidents around the country. The rumours spread by miscreants often cause unrest and incite violence.

On the occasion of this meeting, social media representative briefed the government and told them about the action taken by them to ensure blocking of websites, removal of objectionable contents from their platforms.


During the meeting, Gauba has also asked the officials to nominate India-based Grievance Redressal Officers, develop a monitoring mechanism for time-bound preventive and other actions to remove objectionable contents from public view and prompt sharing of information sought by Law Enforcement Agencies, News Agency ANI reported.

The Union Home Ministry had earlier held a meeting with social media representative on June 28. Since then, a series of meetings have been conducted with Law Enforcement agencies and social media providers ensuring effective measures to curb misuse of these platforms by anti-national elements involving proliferation of Child Sexually Abuse Material Act.
