Hurriyat Founder Syed Ali Shah Geelani Passes Away At 92

Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani passes away at his home in Srinagar. The 92-year-old Pro-Pakistan Kashmiri separatist breathed his last on Wednesday evening. The hardliner Islamist leader had been ailing for long. He had resigned from politics and Hurriyat last year. The funeral took place this morning.

Syed Geelani the face of the separatist movement in Jammu and Kashmir was buried in Srinagar’s Hyderpora area. The funeral took place at 4:37 am on Thursday. Mobile internet was shut down in Kashmir valley as a precautionary measure to prevent confusion due to the spread of rumours.

Saddened by the news of Geelani sahab’s passing away. We may not have agreed on most things but I respect him for his steadfastness & standing by his beliefs. May Allah Ta’aala grant him jannat & condolences to his family & well wishers,” former Chief Minister and People’s Democratic Party leader Mehbooba Mufti has tweeted.

Security has been strengthened outside Mr Geelani’s house in Hyderpora. Mobile phone services too have been suspended. Some senior members of Hurriyat have been detained. Strict restrictions have been imposed in Sopore district, the area from where he belonged. Security forces have been deployed in strength at vulnerable places for maintaining law and order.
