Jharkhand: Cops lynched for preventing illegal cow slaughter

Jharkhand cops beaten over cow slaughter objection

In a heedless move, a group of villagers of Pakur district allegedly attacked a group of unsuspecting policemen when they tried to prevent an illegal cow slaughter on Eid al-Adha on August 22 in Jharkhand. Four cops were injured due to the incident.

Cow slaughter has been banned in Jharkhand since 2015. On August 18, the State government had directed Deputy Commissioners of all districts to ensure that cattle are not slaughtered on Eid ul-Adha.

Santhal Parganas DIG Raj Kumar Lakra stated that cow slaughter was reported to them from the village.

“A police team then rushed to Dangapara village under Maheshpur police station of Pakur district following a tip-off about cattle slaughter and faced brickbats from the villagers. Of the team that was sent, four policemen suffered minor injuries and were taken to a nearby primary health centre. Doctors referred them to the Pakur Sadar hospital for better treatment, he said.

While Mr. Lakra added that the “the situation is well under control” he also stated that senior officials, including Deputy Commissioner D K Jha and District Superintendent of Police Shailendra Prasad Burnwal, rushed to the spot along with additional forces to maintain law and order.

“We had received a call informing that cattle were being slaughtered and accordingly dispatched a police team. As soon as the team reached the spot, villagers started brick batting, forcing the police to lob tear gas shells to disperse the mob,” Additional Director General of Police R K Malik said.
“Other details are awaited,” Malik added.
