Mumbai has recorded its first death due to the Delta Plus Variant of coronavirus. The fatality is a 63-year-old fully vaccinated woman. She had tested positive on July 21 and passed away on July 27 after three days in ICU. This is Maharashtra’s second death from the Delta Plus. Earlier An 80-year-old woman from Ratnagiri had passed away after testing positive for the variant last month.
The 63-year-old woman from Mumbai had interstitial lung disease and obstructive airway disease before she tested positive for coronavirus. She was already on oxygen at home before she contracted coronavirus. The BMC said the lady was vaccinated with both doses of Covishield. The results of genome sequencing from the woman’s samples arrived on Wednesday. Two of her close contacts have also tested positive for the Delta Plus Variant.
The Delta Plus is a mutation of the Delta, the highly contagious Covid variant first detected in India. There are seven samples from Mumbai that have tested positive for the new variant. As per the State Government 13 more have tested positive for the Delta Plus variant across Maharashtra. Three cases are in Pune, two each in Nanded, Gondia, Raigad and Palghar, and one each in Chandrapur and Akola.
On Wednesday, the central government said Delta Plus has been detected in 86 cases across the country. Maharashtra has reported 6,388 new coronavirus cases and 208 fresh fatalities on Thursday. Total cases in the state now stands at 63,75,390 and total deaths are 1,34,572. Maharashtra’s Covid-19 recovery rate now stands at 96.86 per cent, while the fatality rate is 2.11 per cent.
