Two members of a gang, mainly associated with stealing wallets, cash or mobile phones from the backpacks of the female students at the Mithibhai College have been arrested by arrested by the Juhu police, reported Mid-Day on Thursday.

A student from the pharmacy department of the same college had lodged a complaint at the Juhu police station after she noticed that an ATM card, a pen drive and Rs 3000 in cash was missing from her handbag.

“We scrutinised CCTV cameras installed at the crime spot and saw a group of four thieves, including a minor, following the victim. Three of them covered the kingpin, who discreetly unzipped the victim’s backpack, lifted the handbag from inside and escaped with the others from the spot,” an officer concerned with the investigation was quoted as saying by the Daily.

“The CCTV footage was shown to a mobile thief in the custody of the Juhu police. The thief identified the gang members and gave us their addresses. We managed to arrest two of them and recovered the stolen property within three hours of the offence,” he added.

Meanwhile, the gang members have been identified as the residents of Indira Nagar in Juhu. Tushar Khamkar, 24, and Sachin Raut, 19, are the two arrested thieves, while the investigation and search for rest of the gang members are currently underway.

“The gang would follow the students, especially those wearing leggings or tight-fitting clothes, as these were likely to keep their valuables inside their backpacks,” another officer from the Juhu police station was reported to have said. It is, however, not the first time that this gang had committed an offence. They had in the past also stolen things but were arrested for the first time.
