Petrol & Diesel Price Raised Once Again. Seventh Hike This Month

Petrol and diesel prices across the nation have seen a spike once more on Saturday. Petrol rates have crossed the Rs 100-a-litre mark in four metro cities: Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai. Other cities like Bangalore, Jaipur, Hyderabad, Pune and Gurgaon. Bhopal and Jaipur have also joined the league of the triple-digit rank.

This was the 39th hike in fuel prices since 4 May, as oil companies had observed an 18-day hiatus during assembly elections in five states and a UT. Since then, the price of petrol has risen by ₹10.51 per litre and diesel by ₹9.09 a litre.

Petrol now costs ₹100.91 in Delhi, whereas diesel is retailing at ₹89.88. In India’s financial capital Mumbai, petrol is being sold at ₹106.93 per litre, whereas diesel has reached ₹97.46 per litre.

The central and state taxes make up for 60% of the retail selling price of petrol and over 54% of diesel. Centre levies ₹32.90 per litre of excise duty on petrol and ₹31.80 a litre on diesel. The difference in prices in states occurs on account of local taxes like VAT or freight charges.

Rajasthan levies the highest VAT on petrol and diesel in the country, followed by Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
