COVID-19 Lockdown: PM Narendra Modi to address nation, day after meeting CMs

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation on Tuesday evening. The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) tweeted that the address will take place at 8 pm. The address comes a day after PM Modi held a video-conference with chief ministers on the Covid-19 situation. PM Modi had hinted in yesterday’s meeting that the lockdown would continue, but with far fewer restrictions.

The Prime Minister Office tweeted,

On Monday, Modi had held a video conference meeting with Chief Ministers of all states. This was to discuss the road ahead in India’s fight against COVID-19. He had said the need was to reduce the transmission rate of the disease and to increase public activity gradually. This can be done while adhering to all the guidelines. He further added that the new principle of life would be “jan se lekar jag tak”.

This will be the Prime Minister’s third address to the nation on the Covid-19 situation. He had last addressed the nation on April 14 and announced the extension of lockdown till May 3. The Prime Minister announced the 21-day nationwide coronavirus lockdown on March 25 to curb the spread of Covid-19 infections in the country.

Today is the forty-ninth day of India’s nationwide lockdown. Known COVID-19 cases in India stand at 70,756. The death toll has reached 2,293. Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Delhi have reported the highest number of cases.

The country is in the third phase of lockdown which will end on May 17.
