The Supreme Court has issued notice to Centre and WhatsApp regarding the new privacy policy. The apex court has sought responses from the Government and the messaging app on a fresh plea alleging that the user’s data is being shared with others. A bench headed by Chief Justice Of India SA Bobde questioned Whats App on the lower standards of privacy for Indians in comparison to European users of the messaging app.
The court was hearing the plea by one Karmanya Singh Sareen and others. They are seeking a stay on WhatsApp’s new privacy policy. Their lawyer told the court that WhatsApp was differentiating between European countries and India in its policy.
The bench headed by Bobde said, “There is a concern that circuit of messages is revealed by WhatsApp. The citizens have great apprehension about loss of their privacy and they think that their data and chats being shared with others and it has to be looked into.”
The allegations of sharing data of their users were refuted by Whats App. They said that the same privacy policy is applicable to all the countries. Except for the European Nations that have a special data protection law.
The bench added, “You (WhatsApp and Facebook) maybe two or three trillion companies but people value their privacy more than money. It is our duty to protect their privacy. We are telling you what we heard and read. People think that if A sends a message to B and B to C. The circuit of messages is revealed to Facebook.”
The court will now look into it after four weeks.
