The central government on Wednesday, appointed Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Tushar Mehta, as the the Solicitor General of India. The Solicitor General of India is the second-highest designation/rank for a law officer of the government.
The position signifies; Solicitor General is a legal officer who represents state or central governments in courtroom proceedings.
After the resignation of former solicitor general of India Ranjit Kumar, this position has vacant since 20 October 2017.
Tushar Mehta has been serving as the Additional Solicitor General since mid-2014. Mr Mehta has appeared in many significant cases including the challenge to Section 66A of the Information Technology Act and the arrest of activists in the Bhima Koregaon case.
The state of Jammu and Kashmir in the Article 35A is currently represented by Mehta before the Supreme Court. Other important cases, he is representing are 2G scam case, Aircel-Maxis case, etc
The appointment of Mr Mehta was approved by the Appointment Committee of the Cabinet (ACC). The appointment will come into effect from the day of assumption of charge of the office for a period till June 30, 2020.
