With Assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh knocking the door, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party is trying everything to prove that they are in solidarity with the people of the state. Party president Amit Shah on Monday stated that it was Prime Minister Narendra Modi who raised the issue of ‘Triple Talaq’, which has no place in the society. He was of the opinion that Congress ‘never cared’ about the welfare of Muslim women.
Addressing an electoral rally among a sizeable number of Muslim women, Shah stated, as quoted by Indian Express, “The Congress never cared for the honour of Muslim mothers and sisters. It has no courage to deal with issues like triple talaq. Despite stiff opposition from the Congress, (Prime Minister) Modi has ensured that it (triple talaq) has no place in the country.”
Shah said that the BJP promulgated the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Ordinance on September 19 under which instant triple talaq has been declared illegal. Under this ordinance, accused are punishable with a jail term of three years.
Stating that Modi government did work to empower women in the country, he said that women were given important prime responsibilities under BJP government.
He said, “Not just by words, but Modi government has given them (women) space in the Union Cabinet by inducting nine women ministers including Nirmala Sitharaman as defence minister and Sushma Swaraj as external affairs minister.” It is to be known that Madhya Pradesh will go for polls on November 28 and the results will be announced on December 11.
