Another shelter in Bihar has come under the scanner in the wake of the Muzaffarpur shelter home horror being widely protested nationwide. A couple was arrested and 24 girls were rescued from a shelter home in the Deoria city, Bihar, by the Deoria police due to its licence was revoked after an inspection by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The man and his wife were in-charge and managed the shelter home.

An unidentified 10-year-old girl escaped from the Deoria shelter home and informed the police that they were all treated like servants.  “The girl who escaped had been staying at the home for the last three years. She said they treated her like a servant. She also told us many girls were taken away in cars at night. They returned in the morning and cried through the day. Adoptions were also happening in an illegal manner here. We are looking into it and searching for the missing girls.”

Superintendent of Police Rohan P Kanay said, “When the order to close this institution was made, our people went there and the organisation’s director misbehaved with our team. Today, after a girl escaped from there, we got to the reality of that place. There have been many big disclosures during the investigation. 24 children have been rescued safely so far. ”

The institution’s director Girija Tripathi and her husband, Mohan Tripathi have been arrested, he added whilst saying that a probe is underway and further details are awaited.

Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Anand Kumar said that the girls have been sent for a medical examination and their statements will be recorded by the ma that “The Women and Child Development Department is also coordinating. The inquiry will be done under proper legal procedure.”

Rita Bahuguna Joshi, the Women and Child Welfare Minister has ascertained that the shelter home was asked to be shut down last year after a CBI inspection.

She also added that an FIR had been lodged previously.

In the wake of the incident, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has demanded the resignation of the District Magistrate, IAS Sujeet Kumar.
