24 migrants killed, many Injured after trucks collide in Uttar Pradesh’s Auraiya

Earlier this morning, two trucks collided in Uttar Pradesh's Auraiya district, killing 24 people and 15 critically injured.

Around 3 am in Uttar Pradesh’s Auraiya district about 200 km from the state capital Lucknow, two trucks collided which killed 24 people and several people injured. The injured were rushed to PGI Saifai in critical condition while 16 others are undergoing treatment at the district hospital in Auraiya.

Abhishek Singh, Auraiya’s district magistrate, was quoted as saying by ANI, “The incident took place at around 3:30 am… Most of them are from Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal.”

Archana Srivastava, Auraiya’s Chief Medical Officer (CMO), also told ANI, “Twenty-four people were brought dead, 22 have been admitted and 15 who were critically injured have been referred to Saifai PGI.”

Senior police officer Jai Narayan Singh said, “Some people had got down from one of the trucks that stopped at a dhaba to have tea. That was when the collision happened and labourers who were sitting on the sacks were thrown off. We are still trying figure out why so many people were packed in those vehicles coming from Delhi and Rajasthan. Those injured have been admitted to hospitals.”

Reacting to the incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted in Hindi and stated, “The road accident in Uttar Pradesh’s Auraiya is extremely tragic. The government is involved in the relief work. I express my condolences to the families of those killed in this accident, as well as wish the injured a speedy recovery.”

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath of Uttar Pradesh also tweeted in Hindi, “The death of migrant workers/workers in a road accident in Auraiya district is unfortunate and sad. My condolences to the bereaved families of the dead, instructions have also been given to provide all possible relief to the victims, to provide proper treatment to the injured and to promptly investigate the accident.”
