Akshaya Tritiya — is an annual festival celebrated on the third Tithi (lunar day) of Bright Half (Shukla Paksha) of Vaisakha month. It is mainly celebrated by Hindus and Jains across the world. Notably, Akshaya Tritiya will be celebrated on 07 May this year. Like other festivals, the date of Akshaya Tritiya is also changing as per the Lunisolar Hindu calendar and falls in either May or April in the Gregorian calendar.

The most popular story related to Akshaya Tritiya doing rounds is that Lord Karishna and Sudama were childhood friends and Sudama was underprivileged, who call out to Karishna asking him for some financial assistance or demanding some money as a gift.

At that time Sudama did not have anything except the pouch of Poha and he felt ashamed while giving it to Karishna as treated Poha as a King. His poor friend was overwhelmed by the hospitality shown by the Lord Karishna that he could not ask his friend for financial support which led him to go home empty-handed. The minute he arrived at his home he was amazed to see his run-down hut converting into a palace and his family was donning royal attire. Sudama knew that this was the blessing of his friend Krishna who blessed him with more wealth than he needed or could ever imagine. This is why Akshaya Tritiya is associated with material gains.

• Do not break fast: if you are keeping a fast for a considerable amount of time, do not break it on this day. Breaking a fast on this day is also considered bad luck.
